Steadily growing to be the new Hub for all things fashion, Nigeria is yearly brewing Bankable Young Designers with an opinionated point of view in the fashion and design business.
Regardless, talent, they say, is never enough, especially when you find yourself in the cutthroat industry that is fashion, where funding has always been a major setback for emerging young designers who have more than the passion to create a fortune from the little they have.
On the international scene, established brands like Kering (founded by Guccio Gucci (Kering owns brands like Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Yves Saint Launrent, Balenciaga) and LVMH (who own brands like Louis Vuitton, Loewe, Celine, Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, Fendi, TAG Heuer, Christian Dior perfumes) will invest in established and start up brands with talent that has an eye for the art but also maintains a very commercial perspective.
While Nigeria may be fast growing to be fashion’s global hot spot, its approach to appreciating the arts especially with creating that one-of-a-kind fashion is slow paced, not just because investors of the ilk of Kering and LVMH aren’t existing let alone taking the risk, but also because we live in a society where young talents are sometimes confined by finances, culture, beliefs and norms, thereby limiting the zeal to try out new things.
While the idea of pret-a-porter may have had its crippling effect on the creative abilities of countless Nigerian designers who practically divorce the Arts from their craftsmanship, some are in the business of creating “Cool Clothes” for “Cool People” who don’t exist in the real world and as much as fashion designing is about bringing fantasy to reality, a good designer will understand the essence of striking a complementing balance of creating arts and selling the art.
